“My Future, My Job” was the theme of the May meeting held in Sarnia. Presenter Bob Vansickle has worked for over twenty-five years assisting people with a disability to find employment. Families attending heard an engaging, informative presentation on ‘real’ employment, and the benefits for persons with disabilities and businesses alike.
The Care & Share Family Network believes that, as parents and caregivers, we are the best advocates for our loved ones, especially if the person we support is not able to speak for themselves. “Advocate to Inspire” was the theme of the March meeting held in Wallaceburg. Fourteen family members discussed tips on how to be a better advocate, and shared ideas and positive phrases to help with difficult or emotional conversations with teachers and other service providers. The Wallaceburg branch of the CK Public Library were onsite to provide a lively concurrent activity for people supported and their siblings, which included a puppet show, craft, games and refreshments.
Self-Care for Caregivers was the theme of the January 2019 meeting. More than 30 family members gathered in Chatham to learn about mental health, mindfulness and the importance of using respite services.
Participants had the opportunity to make a rejuvenating body scrub, and took home information on the benefits of journaling, positive affirmations, gratitude and making time for themselves. Click here for some of the resources shared at the meeting.
Members shared their favourite ‘comfort food’ recipes and had the opportunity to try ‘chair yoga’ and learn simple stretching techniques.
